Cats or no cats

Cats or no cats
I just ordered a set of kooks 1 3/4 stepped to 1 7/8 race headers and catted y-pipe. Anyway I am planning on deleting my air and egr systems. I have read that your exhaust tends to be raspy if you don't have cats is that true??Anyway what other use would my cats serve for other than sound for by cat back. I also read that the air system sets off the cats on cold starts, but if I don't have the air systems do the cats ever set off? One last thing will I pass emissions in Texas???

lol if you take the air and egr off you are already failing inspection in texas. cats off is a def. no no if you want to pass inspection. even when you get the headers and move the factory placement of the cats, that is technically against the law, but most places ive been to dont say anything. The cat SES code is what your talking about? once you get your car tuned and your o2 sensors moved for your headers you shouldnt have a problem.

No cats.
I'm not running cats. A friend was standing about 3 feet from the drivers window yelling a few last words with the engine idling and it was hard to make out what he was saying and that was this morning. In the cockpit, cruise noise is maybe a tad louder, big difference is when you get on it. I like the sound as the Corse pace car mufflers was a big disappointment with the stock system. I think I'll leave it as is as I'm half deaf anyways from forty years of flying.

I love these threads. You won't get a straight answer mainly because of the subjective nature of the question. You'll get a bunch of loud is good and a bunch of cats = rassp (two ss's was not a typo ) . Best thing you could do is listen to various combo's in person. No doubt no cats will equal a rasspy sound at a given RPM at one point or another - mainly deceleration...it can't be argued. I intend on removing my AIR crap too with my new setup but will still run cats. The power loss is marginal at best with a good cat in place.

I'm running an ORY...it is definitely louder and I needed to add a Borla XR-1 to minimize the rasp though my GMMG...I love the sound. However, not sure exactly how much of a benefit there is power-wise, but I'm definitely having second thoughts based purely on the stench of unburnt fuel...the fume smell is a PITA...my garage stinks of unburnt fuel, there is a noticable increase of black "soot" on the exhaust tips, and my clothes stink of unburnt fuel if I'm around the car for any length of time...just a little side effect to consider.

I just added cats to my set up and I enjoy it alot better. Its a more mellow sound with almost no interior sound during regular driving. The stink with no cats was annoying as well. Overall, I prefer cats.

You could always opt for high flow cats.
Of course it's not as goot as an ORY, but they flow much better than OEM cats. It's sort of a happy medium.

I have the Kooks stepped headers with a catted y-pipe and the Borla adj. catback. Without any plate installed for the catback, the car has a real old school sound. I get just a little raspiness but that doesn't bother me. Ofcourse, I have a large cam that helps with the sound
