would no muffler cause check engine light?

No that shouldnt cause a Check engine light. Best bet is to take it to a auto parts store and get it scanned. They will be able to tell you exactly wahts wrong with the car in no time.

As long as you're not bypassing the o2 sensots with a cutout or anything, that should not be the reason. The o2 sensors may be bad, as well as several other sensors might be the problem. Get it scanned like ArticZ said.

There are TONS of DTCs that will trip an SES light. You'll need to get it scanned as the others have said....
