The larger the tips are, the louder the sound. I'm running 2.5" slash cut tips on my T/A and i recently heard another LS1 with the same exhaust setup as me (headers, midpipe, muffler) with 4" tips, and his car sounded louder and a little deeper. I know some tips have resonators inside them to give the exhaust note more of a growl.

yeah the tips do change the sound. i went from stock z28's to 2.5" round tips, and it cut down on the drone and is less deep.

I donk know about louder but tips do change the tone. The diamater makes a difference, the length, also a rolled edge tip will change the sounds as well.
