Default Can you clean an intake?

I was checking my air filter and I got courious. I got a flashlight and looked in my intake through the throttle body. Woah I gotta get a catch can. Its got a pretty good film of oil in there. The car uses about 1 quart of oil every 2500-3000 miles but I never thought about it gumming up in the intake. Will this hurt performance? Do I need to clean it? Can I clean it without unbolting everything?

It would probably take you most of a day to pull it off, soak it, then put it back on. If you were to wait a week and check it again, it would probably be due for another cleaning. What I'm trying to say is that it wouldn't be worth it. There really wouldn't be much to gain either.

I am sure after you got it clean it would just build up again. Personally I would just leave it alone or you could always just buy a LS6 manifold instead

I would think that if you ran some GM top end cleaner through the PCV in the TB that would get a lot of it out. Use the liquid not the spray.

It's good to know the oily intake won't hurt anything. I may try that top end cleaner for the heck of it though. Got another question, will the oil being feed from the PCV set the PCM to a low octane tune?

You can always switch to a LS6 PCV system, it will cut down the oil intake ALOT from what I've read on this board. Parts are about $60, although you do have to pull the intake. www.ls1howto.com has instructions if your interested.

Like SS said, Ls6 valley cover and a catch can too, and id put a air oil separator after that or just a clear gas filter to catch oil vapor.

Almost five years ago I installed a truck PCV orrifice that had a smaller diameter than stock. Ever since than I've never had an oil consumption problem. I use Mobil 1 a full 6 quarts, change it every 5,000 miles, and never have to add a drop.

I had the LS6 PCV conversion on my old engine... really did help oil consumption.

Yes you can clean it - it is plastic. You can remove the intake in less than one hour. No special tools needed except a fuel line removal tool ($10 bucks).

Just plunk it is a bath tub with hot soapie water. Scrub it with a small bottle brush; go in throught he TB opening and through each intake port. Let it soak for a while. Then remove and spray out with a high pressure garden hose.

It is very easy. Don;t re-essemble until it is completely dry, however. Also don't ever wash your injectors.

I have a BIG catch can and no oil really gets sucked in any more.... but i have cleaned mine this way a few times...

I hate dirt and gunk. So I don't re-essembly any engine parts without cleaning them.... just an old but good habit.
