Default New exhaust setup.....sounds like crap

Well I finally finished my exhaust change. I added Pacesetter LT's and a TSP ORY Y-pipe and hooker catback. I need to say first off that the TSP y-pipe is a PITA. We had to spend an entire day simply expanding the ends so they would fit over the collectors and other pipes.

But I must say that I am very dissapointed in how my exhaust sounds. I like a loud/deep sound and it has almost no low tone to it. and between 2900-4000 RPM's it sounds AWFUL. It sounds even worse than my V6 firebird did in that range. It sounds like it doesn't have enough backpressure possibly?.

Is there anyone else w/ this setup who is having similar problems? I plan on getting the MS3 cam from TSP along w/ the supporting mods, and would that give it the sound I am looking for? Thanks for the help

Hooker and Magnaflow are supposed to sound the best with an ORY and LT's. So I dont know why you dont like the sound, putting in a cam will make it sound better...and meaner.

I dunno... I must be the only person on this board that could care less about how my exhaust sounds just as long as it makes the car faster.

headers and a Y pipe seem to make for a bad sounding combo...

Well I have the Hooker LT's and Hooker Cat-back and I have no cats. The Hooker LT's are just a more expensive version of Pacesetters. I have a Hooker ORY though. Mine sounds good at idle and WOT. Try a different ORY maybe? Its not to expensive.

My Suggestion Is Get Some Cats It Will Get Rid Of That 2900-4000 Awful Raspy Sound And You Would Probably Get The Sound You Are Looking For...

I was considering doing that but if getting my cam in a few weeks will give it the sound I'm looking for, then I don't want to waste the money on Cats.

Also, it seems to have an 'airy' sound to it whenever it gets over 1200 rpms. Thats why I was thinking it didn't have enough backpressure and a cam would solve that problem. Thanks for the help guys

You can also try adding a Borla XR1 to the I pipe, it'll cut down on some of the rasp and mellow out the "bad" range w/ out effecting performance much at all.

Forget the cats - my son has the same setup - PaceSetter LT's, 3" ORY and a hooker CB with the black 2chamber can out back. He had a few problems with the ypipe. It was touching the tranny on the back side, and the cb pipe as it went over the axle was touching the location bracket for his PHR - he bought some larger sleeved clamps, moved his ypipe back 1-1.5", adjusted the cb pipe a bit and took care of his problems - now it sounds very nice and low at all rpm ranges. Though I have to say that my setup sounds even better in my opinion: JetHot LT, 3" ORY, magnaflow cb with single 3" tips - could not be happier.
I would say , check for any leaks, loose connectors, etc, then get under your car with a rubber hammer and ping the separate pipes a bit to listen for rubbing/touching/vibration problems. A lot of crappy noises coming from exhaust's has to do with install/location problems rather than with the sound characteristics of the parts.......
Good luck w/project - sounds like you are building a real beast - stevet

I also have the Lt's/ORY/Hooker CB setup and am not exactly thrilled with it. It sounds good at idle, but at lower rpm's I also notice the airy sound. Midrange, is raspy and reminds me of a V6 with a flowmaster. WOT does sound good though.

I'm going to go back under and check for leaks in all of the ORY ends. I regret not getting the Hooker ory or a one piece y-pipe now. But I'm getting the Magic Stick in a few weeks and that will give me a the sound I like

Add cats. My exhaust is really deep.

4" round 18" long tips help too.

I heard my exhaust right next to an LT1 with a flowmaster. Mine was deeper.

Adding a cam is not gonna solve your raspy exhaust sound... It will however make it sound a hell of alot meaner at idle though.... It's just the nature of a y-pipe & ls1's, although the flowmaster y-collectors do help alot.

That's my car through Hooker catback with a Mufflex ORY. With my old Y pipe, it had rasp and sounded trashy in the rpm range you described. The Mufflex ORY uses the flowmaster-style Y collector which helps soo much with that. I love the sound now.

Friend of mine has the PS LT's, PS Y, and Hooker Cat Back and it sounds good, quiet at idle, no rasp and WOT is enough to let you know it's not stock.

I have the same exhaust, except I got the catted y. Sounds awesome, and I'm pretty picky. I would recommend cat's, or put a Dynomax bullet in line to take the rasp out. I would say you will probably like it even less after the cam.
