Question Building "Mamo-combo" - do I want an 85mm MAF?

I'm putting together a stock-cube LS1 for my 2000 SS. It will consist of AFR205's, 224/228 AFR cam (most likely), FAST 90/90, etc. I've been assuming I would be using an 85mm MAF with this setup since it didn't make sense to me to choke down the intake flow with the 78mm unit. I mentioned to my tuner that I would probably be running an SLP 85mm MAF and he's fine with it.

My question is, after having read lots of bad comments about the 85mm MAFs, for a package like mine, that, let's assume, will be in the neighborhood of 440+rwhp, do I really NEED an 85mm MAF? I've got some ported ends and a stock MAF now - would that be holding me back with the new H/C setup?

Now, if hypothetically an 85mm MAF were the way to go and I have someone who can tune for it, is there any one that is better than the others? Seems like the SLP MAF would be a pretty straightforward swap, but it sounds like it bypasses the IAT with a resister. If this is correct, is this not a bad idea? What other options would I have?

A Delphi truck MAF with the screen punched out,
and the 6.0 truck MAF table, have been trouble free
for me. Not to mention only about $30-$40 out of
pocket. "Poor man's Z06", a-yup.

As near as I can tell all of the Delphi units' core is
the same and the table differences are meant to
fine-twiddle the airflow for inlet tract differences
(airflow bias etc.).

Hey Jimmy, are you saying that the Z06 has a 85MM MAF? If so I never heard that before. I wonder why the Z06 MAF would cost alot more than the truck MAF?

You definitely don't want to choke down a FAST 90/90 with a 78mm MAF, even a ported one. Run the 85mm MAF of your choice or even better, tune your car for speed density and eliminate the MAF all-together...that's what I did. I picked up around 4-5 more rwhp by eliminating the 85mm MAF in my setup.

I am sure that it is just one other thing deverting or holding back maximum airflow.

New for new, they are all about the same although
the Z06 unit is lower production numbers. I believe
SDPC has them. But I bought a couple of truck MAFs
off eBay, for science project purposes and ended up
running one of them (minus screen). One under $30
and one a little over, both used, both matched each
other dead-nuts initially and after I descreened the
one, running them in a tandem tube with a leaf
blower for air and a DMM for frequency numbers.
But I digress....

Corvettes switched over after 2001 I believe to the
85mm. The Z06 has no screen and the regular C5 I
guess is screened (?).

The entire thing could be dispensed with by more
tuning but since it doesn't seem to be bothering me,
I don't bother it.

Don't forget your adapt-'em-up harness from Casper's.

So, just to make sure I have my facts straight...

- I can pick up an OEM 6.0L truck MAF or an LS6 MAF and then we can just use the MAF table from the respective donor?

- Both of these MAF's have the integral IAT and the 5-wire connector, right? So, jimmyblue, the Caspers harness you referenced will allow me to connect my 2-wire IAT plug and my current 3-wire MAF plug to the 5-pin 85mm MAF, correct?

If so, is this the correct harness?

Thanks, guys for all the inputs. Much appreciated.

Right, if you notice that Pace P/N it's a Casper's
part, Casper's is now a sponsor and when I bought
mine it was slightly cheaper just to go to the source.

You can use the "right" donor table or try out various of
them. There are slight differences, I found on my
setup there was one truck table that seemed cleanest
(some do not populate or put screwy data in the low
airflow frequencies, or are leaner up top). The AFR on
my wideband matched up right on with the commanded
so I figure this is a good one for F-bodies, though funky
intake configurations or monster cams might need minor
tweaking:

MAF Type freq Hz 750 800 850 900 950 1000 1050 1100 1150 1200 1250 1300 1350 1400 1450 1500 1625 1750 1875 2000 2125 2250 2375 2500 2625 2750 2875 3000 3125 3250 3375 3500 3625 3750 3875 4000 4125 4250 4375 4500 4625 4750 4875 5000 5125 5250 5375 5500 5625 5750 5875 6000 6125 6250 6375 6500 6625 6750 6875 7000 7125 7250 7375 7500 7625 7750 7875 8000 8125 8250 8375 8500 8625 8750 8875 9000 9125 9250 9375 9500 9625 9750 9875 10000 10125 10250 10375 10500 10625 10750 10875 11000 11125 11250 11375 11500 11625 11750 11875 12000
