Default synthetic oil

My car has about 65,000 miles on it and I have always used regular oil when changing at every 3,000 miles. I usually use up to 1-1.5 qts. Can you change to synthetic oil after running the car this long on regular oil? Will it help or hurt anything or just drain my wallet?

you can change to synthetic, but you may use a little more oil then usuall because it is a thinner oil.

i reccomend a thicker synthetic. Usually when you switch to a synthetic, your oil consumption should drop, since the synthetic oils have a higher flash point that dyno oils. I reccomend Mobil 1 0w-40. I love it, protects great at ALL temps, and is a good think oil, yet flows as well any!

I googled synthetic oil and this proffesor said to explain
it to the layman if you take a quart of regular oil in the winter
and pour it. It will pour like mollasses while the synthetic will
pour like it's a summer day. It's all in the viscosity.

Which makes a good Synthetic 100x better on really cold mornings...molasses would take a while to get through your engine on startup huh?

I suggest using AMS OIL. I believe that it is the best synthetic oil out there. It is a bit expensive but worth every penny.

you'll be fine switching now. But like others are saying go to a slightly higher viscosity The Mobil 0-40 is Ok and easy to find. Lots have spoken about the German made Castrol but it's harder to find

Go ahead and go to the synthetic if your wanting to. If your looking for a good oil that is readily available then go with the Mobil 1 5w40 truck/suv formula. Patman said it is the preferred viscosity out of the Mobils, where the 0w40 european formula "used" to be...I am going with the 5w40 on my next change.

Default 1/2 and 1/2

A rule of thumb is to go 1/2 and 1/2 for 2 oil changes due to the diffrence in thickness

ok...so I be slow now, so be nice to me. I went to the autozone.com site to look and see if they have the german castrol syntec and they don't even have a listing for 0w30 oil. They have an HD30 but it is not synthetic from what I can tell. Is the HD30 the same as 0w30?

No, i dont believe it is. If they dont have GC, then look for M1 0w40 or order some amsoil

hd30 is not the same as 0w30. 0w30 is a muti viscosity oil while hd30 is "straight 30" aka 30 weight all the time.

Mobil 1 5W40. Great oil! The only place i know that carries it is Wal-mart. They also carry the 0W40 if you want to run that.
