Default Engine removal

My 98 z-28 M6 has 167,000 miles, it has been through 2 different nitrous systems and its about time for a replacement. Whats the best way to get it out. I've got the tools, so i could take it on myself. Or, should i have a shop take care of it for me. Also, the price range to have this done. Thanx

This is my post I started, i did it out the top, really not that hard to do. Its expensive to have someone do it, if you got the tools, I would do it yourself. I have heard of ppl using a cherry picker to lift the car too, never used that method, but if u can rig something up like I did, go for it. PM me if questions

Lots of guys on here love unbolting the tranny/k-member from the body of the car, removing the driveshaft/tq-arm, brake lines, steering shaft, unbolting the A/C compressor and letting it dangle, unbolt shock towers, radiator/heater hoses, shifter, and wiring harness.

....and probably a helluva lot more stuff

Then you can attatch a "cherry picker" style engine hoist to the radiator support and lift the body over top of the engine/trans. Have the engine/trans sitting on some furniture dolly to roll it out of from under the car on. You can also use a chainfall / come-along or somthing and lift as well.

The BEST method is to have the car on a 2 post lift

Edit - I think the other guy meant to say "out the bottom", which is the method i described

There are a few diehard "unbolt the trans and pull it out the top" guys on here who swear by it though, i'm sure they'll chime in later

out the top is the easier method. IMO

this is what we do in the shop.
not too hard if you have a lift and the tools.
but if ya dont its impossible!

this way you dont worry about damaging the outside of the car and or takin the hood off etc..

good luck

out the top in under 3 hours! trans still attatched, intake still on, bumper and hood still on, no lift, no pulley.

That's called the dirt-track-special.

Actually the dirt track special would take like 21 minutes, including cool-down time

I believe inspector12 said somthing about pulling the motor out the bottom of an f-body in 50 minutes using his lift.

I bet I could match that, probably on a lift. I dont try to do it that fast, the margin of error goes up when you're racing
