Default 1 3/4 to 1 7/8'' OR 1 7/8" on 408ci????

I hve a 408ci that I barely fired up 2 weeks or so,car is running strong.I would like to upgrade my HLT 1 3/4" to either edelbrocks stepped headers or straight 1 7/8" of somekind.Which would I benefit more from, would I loose alot of low end torque.Just looking for better performance out of diffrent headers.

The stepped ones will benefit you more in the low-mid range while the straight 7/8"s will give you better top end (either one isn't to make a huge, dractic change over the other). I personally wouldn't worry about a slight loss of low end in a 408. So, IMHO, go 1 7/8".

I would worry about low-end loss if you drive in the city a lot with a big cam with a narrow LSA. The cam's gonna have a lot of overlap and be a dog in the city at lower rpm's, not to mention the 3.42's along with a loss in low end torque. It might not be enough to matter to you, but with the 90/90 you're running now and a good set of heads, your top end will be more than fine with the stepped LT's. It's a give and take, just my personl experience.

I lost 20rwtq going to 1 7/8's and started picking up hp at 5000. it did draw my rpm band out about another 500rpm up top. PEAK gain was only 5hp.

What did you move from? Stepped headers or 1-3/4?

What headers did you have before and what do you have now?

That explains it, 1 7/8 all the way are def going to rob you of low end tq. IMO the 1 3/4 stepped to 1 7/8 are the best way to balance the two with bigger cubes.

I agree, it's a nice comprimise between the two.
