Default Coolant Temp Sensor Location

I have my sensor right now in the left head and I think it might not be real accurate!! I am running all Auto Meter Guages, but when I compare it with the Tech 2, it is off by over 20 degrees. Is it an option to drill out and tap the top flat spot in the water pump and put the sensor there?? Or what are my other choices?? Thanks for all the help!!

what year is your car, if its later than a 98 then your guage will be off as these gauges usually are off and won't read exact.

I don't think you can get it to read correctly. You can put an aftermarket gauge in the car and put the sending unit in the passenger side head, or in a plug above the starter.
edit: do you already have the Autometer sending unit in the pass. side head?

I am already running an Autometer guage that is placed in the left cylinder head. I just want it to read somewhat correctly. What are my options?

It's going to be accurate for where it is located. I'm not familiar with Tech 2. But if it's taking the reading from the drivers side head, I would assume the temps. would be very close, however I'm not sure the exact routing that the coolant goes through the motor. There will be a variance depending on where the coolant enters the engine and where it exits. So whatever sending unit is closer to the coolant coming into the engine will show cooler than the one right before the coolant exits to go to the radiator. Thay may be where the difference is coming from. Just a guess.

Your '98 coolant gauge reads correct. The 99+ don't. I wouldn't bother with it on a '98 car.

yes, on a 98 you should be able to tap into the wiring of the sensor there. you can not do it on 99+.

98's use a 3 wire setup. 99+'s use a 2 wire.
