Default stock thermostat mod?

has anybody tried to install the spacer on the factory stock thermostat like some of the ls1 books say to do and if so what did you use for the spacer or where did you get it?i rather modify the stocker for now than spend the 40 to 60 for a new one.

By shimming the factory T-stat you can lower the temp. I dont know the best way to do it though

This "free mod" is pretty worthless and the writeup
that's out there, seemed not to match the hardware
I found on my '02. Tried it, it gave me a thermostat
that didn't regulate for ****, ended up with a 160
Hype-tech at the end of it all. Don't waste your time,
just get the fans set right and call it done.

so you're saying to not bother with the thermostat and just regulate the fans?

I can't for the life of me find the write-up aboiut modifying the stock thermostat.
But I have a modded stock thermo in my car, been fine for 2 years.
It's shimmed and operates as approximately a 167 degree thermostat now.

And yes, you do want to program the computer to lower the fan turn-on temps in conjunction with a lower temp thermostat.

I used a brass ferrule for 1/8 inch poly line and filed it down to .160 to open at 167 degrees. That is the coldest I could get it to open and still fully close. I have done a few and they all seen to be different. Just get a bunch of ferrules and start at .090. I boiled it in water with a thermometer in the water and watched the thermostat till it opened and record the temp. Keep putting in bigger ferules till the thermostat won't close all the way when it cools and just go with the biggest ferule that still allows it to fully close.
