Default Running Rich???

i have installed a whole new exhaust system on my z-28 with long tubes catted y-pipe and magnaflow. i noticed more exhaust fumes coming out than before and i also smell the exhaust more. does this mean i'm running rich? and if so am i in need of a tune? thanks

Long tubes will make the car run alittle richer, If you plan on more mods in the near future heads or cam wait to get it tuned unless the tuner will retune for no charge. Did you remove the AIR system and the EGR if you have one? I've removed the air, egr,and cats you can really smell the exhaust from my car.

More importantly how does it sound?! Thinking about going with your exact setup.

no everything is hooked up to the new system. and heres the great thing, i will pass emissions with this setup after the instal i noticed that the exhaust fumes are really shooting out more. must be because theres less restriction in the pipes and the engine is alowing the gases to just pound on through.

dude, i really like the sound. i wanted to get the borla or gmmg but that would have put me over 2000.00 so i went with the best next thing and got the magnaflow. cost me 1750.00 for the supermaxx system, magnaflow and shipping from summit. and they took under two days to get it to me which gave me enough time to remove the stock system while the new system was being shipped. i have some posts of my install and some really great pics. check them out

It'll run rich after the LTs, it should adjust after about 200 miles, if it doesn't, the other alternative is to tune it
FWIW if the exhaust smells like gas after 200 miles get it tuned, or you'll ruin the cats

I don't mean to take this off topic but would it be possible to get a clip? Do not want to make more work for you or anything, I would just LOVE to hear it.

see, i dont get that because why would anyone bother tuning a car if the computer is going to adjust? i must not understand the whole picture of this. how would the computer relearn if i didnt even change it in the first place?

There is a certain amount of adjustment built into the stock PCM, (and it will adjust based on the inputs of the various sensors) the tuning comes in when the requirements of the vehicle (due to the mods) fall outside the boundaries of the stock programming. In most cases the stock tuning will handle mild cams (ZO6 cam for example) without drivability problems, it usually has enough leeway in the programming to handle LTs, but sometimes (due to production tolerances) the stock tune can't adjust it enough, that's where the tuning comes in. Do you have to get a tune after LTs, (or just about any other mod) no but it'll help get the most out of it (in terms of HP and drivability)
FWIW GMs stock tunes are very conservative, that's why you can get more HP out of a bone stock vehicle, by having it tuned

crystal clear. thanks for that. so my computer might adjust enough or it might not after lid, free ram air, long tubes, catted y, and cat back. does this mean if it does adjust to these mods it will be conservative also? or will it adjust to its full potential? or does it mean that it will adjust just enough to be drivable?

The PCM will attempt to get it close to the "normal" parameters as it can
Will that be conservative, yes it will
Can you benefit from a tune, no matter what level of mods you have, yes you can, is it required everytime you change a component, no
