Default which will give best HP gains

will an exhaust cutout or one of the exhaust setups give more gains. to me it would make sense that a cutout would outflow Any catback/ dual exhaust setup. insight would be appreciated.

It will out flow. It is not un-common to see a nice catback setup with a cut-out installed as well.

You are correct if that was what you were asking and telling at the same time.

Well perhaps because at least in my state, every inspection station I've called and talked to within 20 miles of me says they absolutely WILL NOT PASS me for PA emissions if they see the cutout at any location on my exhaust, even if it is capped. They tell me the only way they will pass me is if I let them permanently weld it shut. At least catbacks are 50 state legal.

Otherwise, I would just spend the $30 bucks for the cutout, $30-$40 bucks for the install, and go that route. But because of the tree hugging safety ***** I guess I have to spend more to get a catback.

gotta love the south. screw emmisions!!!!!! what i have noticed is. though i have 1 cutout it sonly on the right side. but the left side exhaust to me looks to be the most restrictive. not entriely cylinder and very curvy. but i doubt a cutout would fit on that side because of the odd shape tubing.

This is the best way if you ask me. I had a cutout on my stock exhaust It sounded loud but once I put the cat back on there was deffently a seat of the pants differance. Then I got tired of all the mustangs being louder than my hooker so I put a cutout on my hooker catback. Its the best of both worlds. Good flow and quite ride when its caped up and great flow with loud in your face sound.

This all depends on flow rate, a good aftermarket catback typically uses 3" diameter pipe, this will flow fine on a cammed LS1 (~390-410rwhp) without too much restriction, a good muffler will also flow at a sufficent rate to also not cause a restriction anymore than the tubing on it's own is.

David Vizard tells us for optimum efficency we need 2.2cfm of flow for ever 1hp, so a 500bhp engine would need a flow rate of (500 x 2.2) 1100cfm. Many bullet mufflers flow at this level. By adding a cutout you will only by-pass something which doesn't need by-passing. In these cases you will typically see little or no gain at all. If your muffler doesn't flow the sufficent rate then a cutout will help.

However there's more too it than just this, as a cut out will also affect the exhaust pressure wave. This is where power is often gained even on an efficent catback but it's often only in the region of 2rwhp or so. However by adding a cutout to an efficent exhuast you also run the risk of negatively affect the exhaust pressure wave.

The bigger problem you face is although the stock muffler is restrictive so is the 2.5" tubing it uses, a cutout can not get around the tubing size.

As a cheap starter mod, or the need to run a quiet catback a cutout is ok, however if you have a decent catback then the best place for a cutout is on the shelf. - IMO

So basically a cutout will out flow but not outperform until you get into the strip only power levels.

With only a lid on my SS, I picked up 11 rwhp and 8 fttq with a cutout.
