Default california emissions....

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question, but here goes:

My son is in the navy and he is buying a car here in Houston, Texas while on leave and then he is going to drive it to California where he will be stationed next. Will the car be California emissions legal? I know they have tougher emissions laws and am not sure if a vehicle registered in another state has to comply? And what happens when he needs an inspection? Any California residents or people who know please reply.

Thanks in advance,
Dean

KEEP the Texas plates!!! Military are exempt - since his home of record is Texas he doesn't need to get Ca smogged. Check there and he can probably got his inspection decals exempted being stationed outta state. I was in the Navy and had Okla registeration and plates. Really ticked off the local cops - I had a 84 Camaro with absolutely NO emmissions. Oklahoma never required that I got thier inspection decals either

Now to bring a car from outta state and try to register here the buggers want to charge somethin like $1500.00 at the DMV(Dept Motor Veh.) plus ya gotta go through He!! to get smog certified - just a pain in the A$$.

I assume he's getting / bringing a LS1?? He can mod like mad here with Texas plates!!

Actually, bringing a car into CA isnt' that bad of a deal. I bought a supercharged 95 Truck from Utah back in 99 and brought it into CA. That was back when there was the $300 smog impact fee for Federal Emissions Standard Vehicles, which has since been ruled unconstitutional.

And my "new" car, a 98 T/A, was purchased on ebay from a dealer in TX 2 weeks ago. I will be registering it this next week. It just needs to be weighed, smogged, and visually inspected at the DMV (to make sure #s match, and then I pay the registration and sales tax fees and the car is good to go. No emissions modifications are necessary to pass CA smog requirements.

Ahh still I'd keep the Texas plates and registeration - easier to mod - No LT's are smogable in Ca. I just remembered I had a car - bought here in Ca - moved to washington and registered it there. Moved back and took alot of cra* to get it registered in Ca again.

Since 1996, in California.. By law, he will need a CA emissions test to get a Base sticker. Once he has a sticker...

San Diego at the Navy bases.. were very **** at enforcing this 96-99.. Hopefully someone stationed there now will pop in tell us what the latest is.

Second part.. yes, by all means.. keep the car registered in your home state. It's a great "perk" of being in the military.

Okay, thanks guys, keep me posted. I guess he could check with someone there to see what the requirements are? But he wants me to help him find a vehicle and I was worried about possible emissions issues. He will be here wednesday. He wants a sports car, probably a Camaro SS since he's spoiled driving mine. Yes, I'm crazy for letting him drive it, but I'm trying to be a cool dad.
Anyway, what he gets will depend on price and insurance as he already has a R1 that he bought in Puerto Rico.

Thanks again,
Dean
