Default Should I replace the crank shaft seal??

I have an 02 SS with 4,500 miles. Im am going to install an ASP crank pulley in a few days, is it a good idea to buy a new crank shaft seal to be on the safe side?

With that few of miles and if it's not already leaking, I wouldn't replace the seal. There's no reason it should get damaged in the pulley R&R process. I would just make sure to put a light coat of engine oil on the new pulley sealing surface before installing. Does the seal ride on the pulley on these? I guess I've never really noticed.

Don't mess with it. You don't need to pull the front cover to do the pulley swap. If you do pull the cover and don't use the proprietary tools to realign it (provided you don't get lucky!) you're risking an oil leak. Ask me how I know... The seal pops in from the front, you would not have to remove the timing cover.

True, but don't you think that it would be hard to pull out straight without the remover tool? When I did mine, it was everything I had to bang it out from the inside without screwing up the cover as it was. I'm trying to head off any potential for problems! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

ASP and my mechanic(very good one) said it was not necessary to replace the seal. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Do you need this seal removal tool if the timing cover is off? Or is it optional? I've never heard of a special tool needed in any of the walkthroughs I've seen.

No, you don't have to spend the $4, you can beat out with anything that will fit. <img border="0" alt="[judgement]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" /> Or, you can drop the $4 and pop it out in 2 seconds with no damage to anything.

Anybody that doesn't own a seal puller ought not to do anything beyond pumping their own gas imo <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> ... tools rule...invest in your future. <img border="0" alt="[USA]" title="" src="graemlins/patriot.gif" />
