Default Borla Sounds Like Crap After Header Install

Just installed Pacesetter LTs and ORY and the Adjustable Borla Catback sounds like crap at high rpm. Any suggestion on how to quiten it down. I lost my plates and I'm not wanting to get a whole new exhaust. Thought about putting a 12" bullet muffler right before the catback runs over the axel. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I second the idea of the bullet in the I-pipe. We went with one on my dad's Z28 with the same exhaust set up as you and it sounds nice. Alot deeper and cleaner sound.

Bullet would be a good idea, they always tend to help our tone. You could probably fabricate your own plates in about 5 mintues with the right tools if you wanted to.

Thanks alot. And I forgot to post before that my ORY is banging pretty bad against the bottom of the car. What can I do to lessen the banging.

Install polyurethane motor mounts or do the BFH mod on a few things.

I'm gonna give this a shot to get rid of my y-pipe banging. I've already got a poly trans mount and that helped quite a bit.

I'll have to cut my y-pipe, but it's a slip fit, so I should be able to clamp it up in my garage until I can get it welded. Looks like it will work perfectly.

honestly, IMO, cut off the borla and sell it and put that money toward a different exhaust. borla, IMO, always sounded like crap, not to mention the ugly tips (again, IMO). you could get several hundred for it and put it toward an SLP dual/dual or magnaflow exhaust, probably the only 2 that don't sound incredibly raspy with an ORY (SLP dual/dual IMO is much better).

Borla sounds like crap either way.

magnaflow bullet is much better. As a matter of fact. magnaflow/hooker catback

Or go magnamouth or dynamouth.

Borla is one of the best sounds out there! Anyway, would you happen to have a sound clip of your Borla with LT's? I just wanna see what it sounds like/how loud it is.

i loved my borla when i still had the manifolds and stock y but as soon as the headers went on i hated it, any catback with headers and an ory is gonna sound like ****. true duals or a y and a bullet to me make for the best sounding exhaust on an f-body and for under $40 a piece you cant beat it.

IMHO, the Borla doesn' t sound bad. With no plate, it wide open, and with no cats' of course it will sound like crap. There are a million threads that say there is rasp with an ORY, so I don' t know what you would expect. If you find a scrap sheetmetal shop, I' m sure you could one to fit and most of that rasp goes away. Cats' do help though... Shoot, you can stick a QTEC in there and only get dirty once, and open or close the exhaust from inside the car...

I found that if you take off the cats, most exhausts will give you a raspy sound at some point in the RPM band. However if you leave the cats on it usually resolves the problem. This is purely based on comparisons over at ls1sounds.com. If you wanna try to solve the problem w/o getting rid of the Borla, try getting some cats, or maybe the bullet before the borla might help.

It shouldn't be too low; remember, the flex pipe is going to come off the header BEFORE the bend where all the banging happens. The bend on the driver side of the y-pipe *should* still be the lowest point. Besides, it's only a 1/2" difference, shouldn't be any different than putting a bullet in the i-pipe.

It should be here in about 2 weeks (backordered) so I'll let you all know how it goes.

not true. I have Hooker catback with Pacesetter longtubes and ORY and it sounds great. No rasp, quiet when you want it to be, but screams at open throttle.

Sorry I don't have any access to get a video of it right now. It sounds awsome at idle and up to about 2500 rpm, but when you nail it it sounds like a machine gun. If I can just get rid of that sound it would be OK. Agian thanks for all the advice.

You can get a screwdriver and pry down one side of the y-pipe a little bit and stuff a rag in there. Then do the same to the other side.

Thats what I did to keep my temporary sanity.

LTs, ORY, and magnaflow catback. I think it sounds pretty good.
