Default Serious water pump problems, need help.

I was on my way to work this morning and my check gauges light came on I immediately checked them and I noticed the temp was rising and the voltage was dropping. I then knew that I had thrown a belt. I pulled over as soon as I could but by that time the temp gauge was already pegged. I went purchased a new belt and put it on I started the car and it immediately started smoking I turned the car off and saw that the belt was slipping on the water pump pulley. I pulled the belt back of and tried to turn the water pump but it would not budge. Well my questions are what could have caused this to happen, do you think i did any damage with the car reaching those temps, and would you reccomend going with an electric pump for a replacement. My car is a 99 SS M6 with 60K miles is cammed and is a full bolt on car. Any info or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a bearing or something in the water pump seized up. I haven't ever priced a stock replacement water pump, but I would guess that it's a lot less expensive than an electric water pump, nevermind the hassle of switching to an electric pump.

It's doubtful that you hurt anything with the car getting hot. The PCM is supposed to shut the engine down before it reaches damaging temps. I slung a belt off at the track one time, and got the car really hot, puked a ton of coolant out of the overflow tank, and it did set a DTC in the computer and shut the engine off (I was trying to limp back to my pit spot so I didn't have to walk... ). No harm, no foul, and everything was fine once I replaced the belt.

I'd offer you my stock pump, but I got rid of it awhile back...

I agree with George. You can get a replacement from www.GMpartsdirect.com for around $150 shipped. It also comes with gaskets.
