Default purpose for the heat shield on cats?

I have the SLP LT's w/thier high flow cats, each which include a heat shield.

Well, on the drivers side cat, one edge of the heat shield is no longer attached to the cat - only attached on the opposite side.

Which means vibration rattle from hell! - yeow.
but at least it was a rattle easily found.

anyway, do the shields really benefit the cats? I'd like to just remove the sheilds completly. any hard in doing this?

If thats a bad idea, then I assume my best bet is to get the shield welded back down?

I would get it tacked back on, take about 3 minutes at a muffler shop and cost about 5 bucks. That shield helps keep the cat hot and the body cold.

Good advice - I took the car in today at lunch break - and not only was the heat shield on the drivers cat part way off, the pass side also started coming loose! ggrrrr.... no wonder my car has been sounding like a bucket of bolts....

So, I had the guy weld both areas, plus the 2 other areas that hadnt 'yet' started to come off.

If this doesnt fix them, I dont know what will. :-)
