Default Air Pump Questions

Today I noticed when I started my car that the AIR system is realy loud. Like 3 times louder than normal. What would go bad this quickly? Wasn't any louder than normal until today. Is it maybe the air pump itself, or I've also heard that the check valves go bad. Also, does anyone have estimates on prices for new valves or a pump. And sadly I'm in California so removing it isn't really an option

If you remove it and have the codes deleted, I'm sure you will be able to pass anyway. The pump only runs untill the car is warmed up and teh cats get up to temp. Don't bring your car in cold to be inspected and you should be fine.

Maby it sucked in some trash and it's louder? Maby it's in your head?

Right, as long as your tuner knows his *** from his keyboard, he should be able to delete the AIR system without producing a "Not Ready" during the computer scan portion of the smog test. You may fail the visual though if the inspector is looking for the AIR system. I still have my AIR, but removing it is on my list of things to do.

After trying again today to figure this crap out, I can tell that the noise is defently coming from the upper area of the engine compartment. It's not coming from the pump that's under the headlight.

Also, does the EGR system work in conjuction with the AIR system (does it shut off when the air shuts off)

And is the line that runs over the intake manifold part of EGR?

Thanks

This is pissing me off. Now the three times I started the car today it's back to the perfectly normal sound. We'll see how it is tomorrow Also, my best guess is that the check valves are going bad. Do you think they'd go bad in 55K miles? And to anyone who's replaced them, you had any problems with buying the ones from say autozone that are 1/2 as much then the dealer wants?

Yeah I'd just remove it. Any basic tuner should delete the codes. No real performance mod. Cleans up the engine bay and lessens weight by a little. Bout it.
