Default Header gasket blew!

Yep, I started up my car earlier today and noticed a loud fluttering noise. Checked it out and the driver side header gasket was blown . I have never changed one before but was thinking I could do this myself sometime tomorrow if i can find the gasket. What all do i need to take off in order to change it, any tips? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated because I would rather avoid paying someone 300 dollars to replace a 5 dollar gasket. Thanx in advance

Pull the spark plug wires and get in there with a small hand and stubby ratchet or boxed end. Get the stock style.

i'd bet that you could just take out all the header bolts, bend the header back a little, and slip a new one in there.

oh, btw, do yourself a favor and get some ratchting wrenches.

is it the passenger side? ...if so make sure you take those damn coil packs off

otherwise, ya plug wires, air and/or egr bolts, and headers bolts and your there

Driver side is easy, pull the wires, remove the bolts, the header will be supported by the Y-Pipe enough to allow you to just pull it back enough to slide the gasket in place.

well anyone with pacesetters would see that the gasket that they provide is much thicker than the one GM offers, does it matter

Pacesetter gaskets are pieces of ****. They are made of PAPER. And paper + hot metal = bad news. I know quite a few people who have had their Pacesetter gaskets burned through. Just takes time. GM did it right with the MLS header gaskets.

Do it right and unbolt the header from the y-pipe. it will let it turn enough to be out of the way. It's a bitch to get it to fit the right way and line up the holes with the flange in the way. It took me about 30 minutes from start to finish.

btw, use the stock style (MLS) like they said.
