Default Does pcm get tach signal from cam or crank pos. sensor

I asked this question in the pcm section awhile back but got no answer so I figured I would try in here where there is more traffic. Which sensor does the pcm get the signal from to send to operate the tach. No I'm not trying to hook up a aftermarket tach. My car all the sudden decided it didn't want to run it now backfires when you ty to start it. Before it totally the it would run a little off and when ever this happend the would also malfunction. I don't have access to get the car scanned right now. My friend that has the equipment is out of town. So I was going to replace either the crank or cam position sensor today and just wondered which one to start with.
