Does your car stink? How about burn your eyes? No cat, tuned car...
Hey all. I couldnt figure a better place to post this...since this is where the exhaust posts are. I have a 99 LS1 with a bunch of goodies. Decent cam, aftermarket heads, etc. It has long tubes, and an ORY. I just installed the magnaflow cat back last night...well started to. I fired the car up to just see how it sounded and the fumes were pretty bad. Like really burnt my eyes and all. The car is outside too... This is in an 87 TA...so I havent really had it running much.
Im just curious if it smells this way because of no cats? Or is the tune off making it run rich? I dont have my MIL light hooked up yet...or the ALDL connector. So I cant confirm that my O2 sensors are good... I was just wondering if this is normal when you !cats...

I hear this a lot from US guys running no cats. But personally I don't see it myself. Cats wheren't introduced in the UK until 1993. So a large percentage of the cars on the roads still don't run them.
I've owned probably 10+ cars all of which didn't have a CAT as stock. And funnily enough not a single one smelt of petrol.
My Triumph TR7 V8, is a 1977 model with a Rover V8 conversion, it has heads, Lt's, exhaust, cam, big 4 brl carb, uprated ignitiion, fueling, cooling, blah blah blah.
It doesn't smell of petrol either.
Faced with this first hand experience I'd have to go with the tune and fueling.

My car is tuned and stinks. The mustang I had before this was a 03 gt with o/r xpipe it stunk. I guess its just the nature of the beast when runnin no cats. when I start the camaro in the garage I have to make sure my door to the house is closed cause it will stink up my wash room and stuff

Cool guys..thanks for the responses. I mean...I realize its not going to smell like roses...but it just seemed rather extreme last night. I guess as long as it doesnt kill me at stop lights it will be fine. I still plan to get it tuned again. Maybe that will help. Either way...its not enough to make me put a catted "Y" back on Thanks again! Anymore input would be great!

I have no cats either, when sitting in traffic running 15.8 AFR at idle, it seems to give me a headache. So I'm not running rich, and it still smells, its only since i removed the cats though and tuned for lean idle.

you eventually get used to it
tuned 408 with dumped duals... when i start it in my garage and back it out, i can't go back in the garage because it will burn my eyes so bad
i never notice the smell otherwise

Yeah I kind of like the smell too. I just hate when it burns my eyes. The way my car was sitting might have had something to do with the amount of odor too. The exhaust was shooting out and hitting a shed a few feet away. It was probably not helping with getting rid of the smell.
I figure Ill run the car a bit...it has been sitting for awhile. And then get it over to rapid to have it tuned. If it still smells...oh well. I learn to love it!
Also..Like I mentioned above I think...I dont have a CEL or the ALDL hooked up yet. So I might have a toasted O2 or something. Thanks for the feedback!

My car smells so strongly that I can't let it idle in the garage or the entire house will start to smell. It will burn your eyes and suffocate you. If you walk behind my car while it is running, your clothes will need to be washed because you'll smell like gas the rest of the day.
I love it.
