Default Cleaning the K&N filter Q?

I just bought another kit to clean my K&N filter. I have 2 bottles of the oil left & I seem to be using a lot of the cleaner. Can You just use Simple green on the filter to clean it? I have seen people use simple green on the filters for their prochargers. What is that cleaner anyway?

i wouldnt use anything but the k&n cleaner, but i dont clean my k&n i go by a new one in fear of over oiling and they never come completely clean

simple green works good on brake dust, removeing oil and cleaning the garage floor.

This is the 2nd K&N filter on the car. With the free ram air mod, the filter gets dirty quick.

I was thinking Simple Green because it will remove the oil well. Also I have seen it used on other cone style filters before.

why would you make fun, how about you do some ******* research on those filters for our cars before you say ****.....go ahead use search and see what comes up.....lets see.....the oil that needs to be put on them ***** up the maf..could set off ses by doing that...also k & n filters do not filter as good as papers ones and they add no horsepower...the only real benefit is that they can be cleaned and last for a long time...do ur research

I've found that it is easier to prevent over-oiling the filter with the spray-on oil can from K&N. The one that you have to run through every pleat on the filter element can result in a very messy and damp oil filter if you are not careful. Go to the autoparts store and look for a Recharge kit that comes with the spray-on oil can.

I just got the spray on oil kit. I think I like the old oil bottle better.

the oil on the filter is what helps it trap more dirt than a paper filter. as far as flow characteristics i dont own a flow bench or tool to check, but it cant be any worse. as far as them screwing up mafs, just dont over oil them(light pink)i know all of mine came with instructions. as far as the cleaner they use call k&n and ask.

Soak it with simple green and wash off.

DO NOT OVER OIL THE FILTER!!!!! It will get all over the MAF and screw up the tuning!

I actually run no oil.

I wouldn't use simply green to clean a K&N. Simple green is a tough degreaser and the oil K&N uses is a very light oil, unless the filter was over-oiled to begin with. If you have to use simple green the least you should do is dilute it.

As another good tip, if you see that your K&N has all kinds of junk in it (especially common if you have the ram air mod), just use compressed air and blow it out. Be sure that you blow from the top side and not the bottom though. Some people say that this damages the filter blah blah blah but I have been doing it for years on both cars and quads and never once had a problem cleaning them like that.
