Default States with a visual exhaust inspection

How do you guys running OR pipes get away with it? I live in VA and supposedly, if I run an OR pipe, I automatically fail a visual inspection. Do I just live in the most **** state on the East coast?

Legally, you have to run cats in Canada and the entire U.S. Some places don't bother with visual.

Hey I live in va too. Ive heard of people going up to the person inspecting their car and slipping them some money, but not sure how good this would work. I have a cutout right now, so im kinda screwed when inspection comes around. What part of va do you live in and might be able to help you a little more.

From all accounts, yes, you do.

So stick it to the man, tack-weld a couple of hollow
shells and heat shields around your ORY.

Depending on the laws in your state, the punishment for offering a bribe to the inspector may be a lot worse than failing the visual inspection.

I like jimmyblue's advice!

Here in VA a shop is only allowed by law to charge so much for doing an inspection. I think it's 15 bucks. But, a full inspection required by law would take many hours. So, it's not uncommon for a shop to spend only a few minutes on your car just to make sure the basics are alright (ie: lights, horn, tires, glass, etc), because otherwise they'd go broke. Ask around for one of these shops. They're everywhere. If you find one, they won't put the car on a lift and see the exhaust.

Me too, but my car is legal in all 50. Cutout shouldn't matter as long as it's capped and not leaking...right?

False, it the place wants to follow the books 100% cutouts are ILLEGAL even if its capped off, how do I know? I failed for having it on the car, even though it was capped off, and he showed me in the book where it says its illegal b/c it allows you to bypass the muffler and or cats which are part of the exhaust/emmission system

Maybe just call a bunch of shops and ask them if they put your car on a lift when they do tech inspection. I doubt they would say no, but if they do you could just go their.

I live in southeast virginig (chesapeake). SO i guess i cant really help you.

Best solution.
I just got mine inspected a couple of weeks ago. I was amazed, the guy didn't even check under the car. He just hooked up it to the computer. I would think normally they would do a quick check for cats though. I got a safety inspection at the same time and he didn't even pull a wheel and check the brakes. Maybe it's because he thought the car was fairly new (only 13k on it).

This is what I did and haven't had a problem for the past 5 years with the visual, I used the stock cats cut in half and welded to the new y pipe. You will need to wELd up one of the existing slip joints since it will be under the cat. Looks good and fools the MAN!
