Default is it my water pump?

So last week while driving my temp gauge just immediately sweeps over and pegs out triggering the check gauges light, I pull over and a minute later the gauge settles back to normal and no further trouble, it did this 2 or 3 times last week, then this morning it buries but this time it takes a godd 10 minutes of sitting cooling down to go back, I limp it home and it pegs twice more on me, but after shutting it down for a minute it goes back to normal, is it my water pump or a gauge problem?

Check your coolant level, and where youpark your car for coolant leaks. When ours leaked though we never saw any pools of coolant but it did leak down the front of CT cover and all over the oilpan and k-member. I replaced the waterpump and no more problem...
