Coolant flows through it like a regualr coolant hose. The fluid is circulated inside and return to the reservoir.

OK, so it is coolant flowing through the power steering pump. Thanks

The PS fluid is pumped into the heat exchanger which is cooled externally by the coolant flow. The cooled PS fluid is then returned to the PS pump. No coolant is flowing thru the power steering pump.

Thanks Weezzer. I thought that must be the case, but GM has used coolant circulating coolers for other applications, so was not sure with the PS cooler. If I remember correctly, the LT corvettes used a water cooler on the oil filter mount?

Some LT1s and trucks use that style of engine oil cooler. My 2002 1500HD has a similar setup.
