Default Stepped header 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 on an AFR 205, 224/228 car?

Hey guys, i haven't bought my headers yet and Edelbrock came out with some stepped Stainless headers for $619 and a stainless ypipe for 169. I have AFR heads 205cc and was gonna get the AFR 224/228 cam. Would i lose power with these headers? Thanks!

Doubt it, the stepping is only 1/8th an inch.

Well i did use the search and most of the threads are 1 7/8ths vs a 1 3/4 header. Not to much info on the stepped ones. thanks for the opinions, keep em coming!

I found this out:

On my stock 346 w/T-rex and stock 241 heads my car picked up a good amount from Hooker 1 3/4 LT's 3" X-pipe duals w/4x9 3" Magnaflows dumped at the axles changing to Edelbrock 1 3/4 - 1 7/8 slip on colectors and 4x9 3" Magnaflows off the header. I haven't put it on the dyno to see the power difference, but it's deffinately there according to the track times. There are no other changes other than the exhaust in the following times and I have corrected them to 0 DA to factor out the weather....

5/12/06 +728 DA

60'___1.53
1/8___7.054@96.98

Corrected to 0 DA = 7.0@97.72mph

6/16/06 +3358 DA

60'____1.52
1/6____7.085@97.68

Corrected to 0 DA = 6.8@101.63mph

So for me there was a differnce of 2 tenths and 3.9 mph!!!!!!
hope it helps these headers are making the extra power that we all want

The step creates a venturi in the primary which helps the exhaust move through the tubes faster, therefore creating more flow and less backpressure. apples to apples a stepped header will usually be better for LS1's.
I helped a friend install the edelbrocks (coated) and was more than impressed by the fit and finish, also he picked up about 25hp with tubes and a tune. Not bad for a 99.

I've always heard the 1 3/4's were best for stock cubed motor unless your spraying. Lose velocity with the bigger ones.

Mike, I suggest that you contact Tony Mamo to pose your question. But I'm pretty sure that I've read somewhere that 1&3/4" headers significantly out-perform 1&7/8" headers for NA 346 with AFR 205cc heads.

You dont need to contact a the guy that makes the heads....contact a ls1 shop that builds street and race motors every week and have 1000x times the experience with different combos and parts on a variety of applications.
