Default At what point does the stock MAF become a restriction?

Mods in sig, Radix @ 9 psi, 6.0L LQ9.

I've done some searching, and seen a lot of threads stating that the stock MAF is good for awhile, but I'm wondering around what power levels the stock MAF actually becomes a restriction in the intake tubing. I'm contemplating going with the LPE 100mm but I don't want to if it's not going to get me anything.

When it limits your ability to control the AFR consistently, it's a restriction. In other words, it'll become a tuning restriction before it becomes a substantial physical restriction. You could try switching to a larger MAF (ie Z06 MAF) if you feel it's really a bottle neck. But, I don't think that's the issue unless you're running no filter and a 90/90 setup making 600+hp.

I am running a 90mm TB, goal is 12's and 500rwhp, and I'll probably be throwing a 50-75 wet shot at it as well sometime in the near future.

Tuning I'm not worried about, I know the tuning limits of the MAF, just wondering about actual physical airflow restriction.

I've always heard upwards of 600rwhp as a good rule of thumb. I don't back the accuracy of that statement, just voicing what I've heard.

Ok, that's two people I've heard 600 from, so I think I'll be fine with the stocker. Thanks everyone!

I would ask 300bhpton, he knows just about all there is to know, especially when it comes to restrictions. I expect him to chime in at any minute. I don't see the MAF being a restriction for ya.

That's what I had. I just put a stock MAF in and did some brief tuning and I like it better already. Running MAF only for the time being, till I can dyno tune it and do the stock MAF + SD.

I never had a problem with the MAF, but i switched to an SD tune mainly over constant problems with my O2's. Most good tuners will tell to stick with the stock MAF. I believe the MAF is one of the last restrictions to worry about in your intake.

I'm having problems with my O2's also, hoping they go away when I swap headers this week. I'd like to go back to closed loop if possible, but am currently running OL 2bar MAF, and I think this will be fine too if I have to stay OL.

Contrary to popular belief, upgrading to a larger MAF has two benefits: (1) better throttle response, and (2) ability to support more airflow.

Just like the Throttle body. It's only 75 mm, same as MAF. If you port the throttle body, you get a larger opening, which in turn offers the two advantages I listed above. It just makes sense that the same applies to the MAF, flow wise. Just don't say that too loud around here.

Stock truck MAF is 85mm. People do seem to be opposed to the larger MAFs though, curious as to why?
