Default Rear end question

A friend of a friend is selling a rear end. He claims it is a 12 bolt, but I am not so sure it is. He said it came out of a 3/4 ton pickup, but it only has 10 case bolts.

Can anyone tell me any way to verify if it is truely a 12 bolt or if it is a 10 bolt?

the 8.5s can be built to withstand a lot of ****. i'd consider swapping a built 8.5 into an auto car with no brake, just to get durability and not lose 50 hp in turn.

its .3" less than the 12 bolt's 8.8" so now much difference. but the 12 bolt has a sturdier caseing.

The 12-bolt designation doesn't come from the case bolts - it comes from the number of bolts on the ring gear.

Thank you Steve. It is just like people measuring width of a Ford 9" housing. Once again. Ring gear.

Thumbs down

Doesn't matter what size it is if you are planning on putting it in your TA. If it came out of a truck, it's not going to bolt up.

without spending the big bucks? find a 9" ford out of an early ford pickup. you'll have to do some work getting it set up for your car, but you can take pride in your rear.

you can also find other 9" in things like torinos, lincolns, mustangs, vans, tbirds and so on from the seventies and eighties.

Yeah, but getting all that setup and replacing 25+ year old parts starts to add up.

true, but i will let you all in on a little secret.

check out the catalogs made just for stock car racing. and the sites that sell used racing parts. alot of these companies even make custom tubular a-arms for alot less then the cost to buy them from jegs or summit.

I actually was just about to post this (only read a few posts) and then I decided to stop and read what you posted Steve, because I figured you would have something useful to add! Hahah...
