Default CatBacks vs. other

I'd like to add some power to my Formula LS1 and a 60's muscle car sound with out being obnoxiously loud. Yet money is a constraint.

Is there much difference between a cat back sytem versus simply putting a new aftermarket muffler?
I don't really care about looks, it's about power and some sound.

Wich has the best 60's muscle car sound?

Any suggestions and feedback is higly appreciated. My car is a 02 Formula all stock LS1.

Thank you!

Cheers.

catbacks will make a significant difference, while a muffler will only change the sound.

LS1sounds.com is a good site to check out the different sounds of different catbacks. If your looking for a nice, deep sound you could consider an H pipe. Prices vary from shop to shop so you could check local shops for a variation of prices. You could silence duals somewhat with high flow cats and the type of mufflers you go with. If duals are out of your price range, just browse through ls1sounds to see which setup fits you best. Try to listen to the setups you like in person as well to confirm that is what you really want.

with our blcok aluminum you wull achieve that 60's old school rumble. The only thing close to that is going with an H set up and 1 chambers like what i have... BTW H= True Duals

If you want to stick with a y-pipe setup I'd highly recommend Magnaflow for a deep rumble.

i would definately go with a true dual setup. I hear Non-sponsor(in san antonio) does it all custom so you won't have any problems with clearance. And so it is not hugely annoying, just have the pipes run all the way out so you don't get all that reverb back in the car.

Thanks to everybody for your replies, I greatly appreciate your input.

I've checked the LS1.com site. The true duals sound the nicest to me, and it's the sound I'm looking for, but unfortunately I don't think I can afford them. Any one knows which catback sounds the closest to a true dual?

Regards,

EuroSouth.

let me see QTP LTs=$750
Custom 3" H w/all piping 3" fabbed all the way back $150.00
1 chambers = $150.00

so around $1,000.00

I just put a one flopro 1 chamber dumped off the end of my Y pipe near the rear axle.

I love the sound its deep and not too loud til WOT. The muffler was the same price as a flowmaster 1 chamber, like 70 bucks.

BTW my set up is Pacesetter LTs ORY and then the 1 chamber

bought the Lts and Y used for 350. Then the one chamber 70. So 420 for the LTs Y and Muffler

I had borla on the stock manifolds (was on the car when i got it with an ORy) got tired of the rasp so sold it for $450, and came out on top

Thank you for the offer. I decided to wait and save for true duals insyead of purchasing a catback. I'm interested in a system that goes all the way to the back for less noise and vibration, but thanks for the offer. Do you know if there is an Fbody club here in San Antonio ?

Cheers

LT headers, 3" ORYP, stock I-pipe, and Hooker Aerochamber muffler will give you the muscle car sound without being to obnoxiously loud. Not quite either.

What does what our block is made of have to do with the sound of the engine?

The iron block 5.3L and 6.0l sound identical to aluminum block LS1/6/2.

There is an f-body club here in San Antonio. It doesn't seem to be as organized as it was 6 years ago.

However, all kinds of cars meets up at Biff Buzby's every Friday Night. It's at the corner of Topperwein and I-35 in the little shopping center behind the Whataburger.

Check these true dual setups out:
