I don't know much about shorties but I know a lot of people run MAC mid-length headers w/ cats.

hooker.. or edelbrock would be your best choices if you really want to go with shorties..

My car came with them on when I bought it.. otherwise I would have not purchased them myself considering you will likely see about 5hp gain with them. not worth the 5-600$ that they cost for coated ones.

if you have a 98 car.. you might see better gains because the 98 manifolds were a little more restrictive than the 00-02 stock manifolds..

the biggest restriction in the whole system is the cats and Y pipe.. free up those 2 area's and you will gain some nice HP back. For instance.. my car has the hooker shorties.. and used to have the stock Y pipe and cats.. I bought the MAC ORY(off road Y pipe) for stock or shortie manifolds.. and gained a lot of HP.. 13-17rwhp..

my opinion.. keep your stock manifolds.. and get an aftermarket Y with Bullet Cats or ORY.. shorties wont give you what you are looking for.

Man, its too bad you cant run LTs...pacesetters are an extremely easy install, and the catted y from TSP aint that bad either. Is it impossible to just have an "inspection day" tune that is a little leaner than normal?

I really dont think the length in primary tubing is going to change his chance in passing or failing the sniffer... Is there and long tubes out there that are C.A.R.B. approved or what ever it is?

not so far as i know. i know people in california have LT's and that alot of smog stations will overlook them for a price, but with my luck id get the only dick head in the state that would no-go me for them. according to state regs your not supposed to change your exhaust at all, period. yet strangly enough shorty and mid length headers are carb approved. so im back to where i started; i need shorty or mid length headers with cats. can i do a true dual set up from shortys, into cats and that will exit the rear of the car?

what i forgot is that as far as i know LT's will pass smog, but not the visual inspection as they are not carb compliant.

....because they move the cats from the stock location.

what year is your car? if it's 98-99 go ahead and i recommend pacesetter shorties coated for around $400 (yes it is bank for shorties) but most shorties are expensive unfortunantly

if you have '00 and up do bother and just pop a nice flowing catback on there

Midlengths are NOT smog legal. Only CARB approved shorties are, which is at least JBA, not sure about hooker...do they have a carb #?

I ran JBA headers into high flow cats into a true dual exhaust and with all the boltons pulled 344 rwhp, so power can be made, you just need a lot more mods to do it.

Best bet is to look for a used set of shorties, because they are going to be expensive, just buying them brand new like that.

BBK makes the only 1.75" primary shorties out there, which should make the most power of all the shorties.

I'll be running JBA's ONLY because they are only CARB approved headers that I know about....Buy a set used as the price for the new ones are really expensive..

True they dont/wont produce the same amount of HP gain and the stock "logs" on the 02 are pretty good...but I believe the shorties are better flowing..and better is better...and when like me your trying not to max out HP but optimize HP they represent a viable option

Go with BBK shorties, they have 1-3/4" primaries, larger than any other shorty header for our cars.

I have a pair of uncoated edelbrock stainless shorties I will sell you for $125 shipped. I'm swapping to LT's this winter and have no need for them. Have about 2000 miles on them. They really improve the sound of the car, gained about 5-10 HP, judging by my slight increase in trap speed. Let me know if you're interested. They'll be on the car for a bit though, as I have no interest in tearing them off at the moment.
