Default Cork in water pump

Im replacing the thermo on an LS2 water pump and there was a piece of round 1/2 inch thick cork under the thermo. Does it need to go back? I dont recall seeing it on the ls1 pump. Its a new OEM pump never ran. TIA,

nm its dissolves, I guess its to prevent corrosion or something
