Default Rasp and Y-Pipe?

The one thing I don't like with my exhaust now is the rasp, and I'm pretty sure I remember a couple months ago some guys on here told me that the Y-pipe and the merge have a lot to do with it. So, do I remember right, or no?

And what is probably the best y-pipe/merge you can get? I would think the merge would be the most important part, but I don't know.

Thanks

alot of ypipes are more like t pipes and that causes the exaust to crash into each other.. im sure that can cause some rasp.. but im not an exaust expert so this is just a thought/assumption

the Y is the reason you have rasp for most cases. its caused by the unequal ness of the Y. if you notice you dont get much rasp with a vette since they have true duals. the trucks are the same way

that and our firing order doesnt help much for rasp

Yeah I have noticed the TSP ORY is closer to a T than a Y shape at the merge. Is there anything I can do about that? I could probably take it to the local exhaust shop if there is a really good merge that doesn't come in a Y-pipe, but it would probably be more expensive. If there's a Y-pipe thats really good I could just buy that and stick it in there. What would you guys suggest?

Edit: Or is there nothing I can do to help rasp with any Y, only by going to duals?

Will the y-pipe actually be able to eliminate the rasp? If not, I'm not going to bother with the Y. The only reason I would change from the TSP Y to another one is if it eliminated the rasp. If it doesn't then I think I'm going to go duals with Borla XR-1s.

Edit: Ok, i've been looking at some options and I think I know what I'll do if you guys tell me it can get rid of the rasp. I will get a flowmaster y-merge with 3" inlets to a 3.5" outlet (~$45) unless you think the 4" outlet would work better, and then a reducer back down to the 3" pipe of the catback. Should be a lot smoother flowing than the T shaped thing I have now.

I have. A lot actually, but it doesn't really help any. After I did a lot of listening and reseach I chose what muffler would be the best (with an ORY) and got that. I still got rasp though. The only thing is there are people with the hooker that say they have absolutely no rasp, so the only thing I can figure is that it's the Y. I don't know. Let me get a pic of the TSP ORY for you. The pic they have on their site is slightly less T-ish than mine is. lol. let me go get the link and I'll post it.

Here's the link. Imagine the place where the driver's side exhaust pipe is welded onto the main pipe (passenger side) being about an inch forward of that so it makes a little more of a T shape:

have you ever considered running a pair of bullet mufflers in the ypipe? Thats supposed to help reduce the rasp. Im curious what a pair of 3" powersticks would sound like. They are only 3.5" round for an easier fit.

mufflex y pipe with electric cutout in stock stock catback is best. Good power, no rasp.

here's my story...

started out with stock manifolds, cats and flowmaster catback, no rasp sounded good. needed more, so i then went to Jet Hot Lt's, tsp catted y, and still kept the flowmaster catback, then came the raspy sound. Ditched the flowmaster and installed an SLP resonator dumped, and OH MY GOD!!! it sounded LOUD and RASPY, i could be heard from a mile away!! got an exhaust ticket, and then decided i needed to fix the loudness... then i slapped on my STS kit, kept the LT's and had a custom 2.5 inch ory and exhaust from the header collectors to the turbo installed, and by far, this is the best setup yet!!! the rasp was eliminated, and the exhaust sounded good again (plus the added benefit of the turbo!!) it may take awhile to find the tone you want, but good luck!!

I had rasp with my Mac headers and ORY pipe and I had the Hooker aero chamber muffler. Swaped out for a magnaflow and it got even louder. I put some magnaflow cats in the ypipe and the rasp is completely gone.

I'm thinking about doing on of two things. Tell me which one you think would be better. Either way i would sell the stuff that I didn't use that I have on there now to make back some of the money.

1. Take out the TSP ORY and buy a Flowmaster 3" In/3.5" Out merge and a 3.5-3" reducer to go back down to the 3" size and stick with my hooker catback. This would cost about $75 + whatever the shop charges for pipes that are left and welding - what I can sell my ORY for on here.

2. Trade the ORY and Hooker for custom true duals(X pipe) with borla round mufflers from a local car performance shop. That would cost me about $230 for the mufflers + about 400 for the shop creating the rest (got quoted last summer for about $500 or a little more with two flowmaster mufflers, so I'm guessing what it would be if I brought him mufflers) + tips - what i can sell my ORY/Hooker on here for (only about 7k miles maybe at the most).

What do you think out of those two options?
