Default Before or after? oil pressure sending unit

So like an idiot i break the oil pressure sending unit while swapping intakes. Right now there is no intake on it and im wondering if it would be easier to put the new oil pressure sending unit on before i put the ls6 on, or after? Also, could the car be driven w/o a sending unit?

thanks

When shopping for the sensor make sure it's for a '98, they're different than the 99 and up. Lots of people break them, happens all the time.

Before as it is almost impossible to install with the intake on, if you drive around with it off expect oil all over the rear of your engine bay as it will shoot out oil if you go wot or any where near wot.

You need a special socket to install it with, which you can get at an autoparts store. When you put the new sensor on (before the new manifold), leave the socket over the sensor, it will protect it while you install the manifold. Most people break it off by hanging the brake booster line on it. Just be mindful that it's fragile and you should be fine.

Whats this special socket everyone speaks of? How can one avoid hanging up the line, is there an easy way to disconnect it?

Ruh roh. There's not a big (20mm or so) hex section left? You may be able to use an ease-out.

Make sure you lift the rear of the manifold as it's going on so the hose goes over it. I ilke to install it from standing on the driver side, that way you can see what's going on.

i thought GM had their engine's to not be able to turn on without having a signal from the oil pressure sensor, to protect itself from not "seeing" any oilpressure and running the engine "dry"

hmm didnt know that, i know on earlier GM vehicles when the oil pressure switch was disconected the fuel would get cut off. guess they finally changed that.

It really is not that big of a deal. Maybe because I am 6'4" I can easly reach back and put it in but the socket will make it easer. I think last time is used the same socket as the one for o2 sensor. any deep well socket will work.........
