Default preventing disaster...

So a few of you may have read my previous thread about having my motor knocking now. Now I haven't got the motor apart yet but assuming it is a spun rod bearing, what would you do to prevent this from happening again. For this season I'm going to try and get away with putting the motor back together fairly cheap (but do what it takes to make it hold together). New rod bearings, polish the crank etc? Thanks in advance guys..
