Post Typhoon 85mm manifold &TB dyno: final results

Here are my results. First pull is the baseline, pre heads. Second pull is after the heads, with stock LS1 78mm manifold/TB, without tune. Final is after the 85mm manifold, TB and tune. Looks like its a wash, but I did pick up some in the low-mid ranges, but probably attributed to the tune.

Obviously no gains, and if you consider the tuner picked up about 10 whp, you may even say it lost power. In monitoring the readings on the dyno the tuner indicated there was vaccum still present. I attribute that to the runners in the manifold, they are pretty rough and no polishing was done. Also, I went with a gasket set by Holley, which unless they are precisely aligned, could partially block off some of the ports. The alignment is not easy, it could be a contributing factor.

Next up, pull the manifold and polish the intake runners and try a different brand of gaskets and better ensure alignment with a sticky spray.

A better readable dynosheet is at: http://www.ccgto.com/Dan_E/Dyno.jpg

Here is how it looks mounted:

I still plan to try polishing the intake runners and see how that does, look for the next dyno in a few weeks.

Sounds good. Look forward to seeing it. Just strange to have no gains straight out of the box.

What I did on mine is cut them to match the ports on the heads. I don't have any results except for longer tire marks. I can definately feel the difference over the ls1 intake.

Polishing the intake runners really won't do a thing for you. Air doesn't actually move over the surface, there's a boundary layer of air molecules that "sticks" to the surface and the airflow moves over that. I wouldn't waste my time polishing the runners as it may only gain you 1-2 hp and for the amount of work involved, it's not worth it. This goes to show that these intakes are not living up to their claims in real world testing, which sucks. The Mustang guys have the same issues with their intake for the 4.6 SOHC engines.

I was talking about the gaskets, they cover part of the port on the head.

If cleaning the passages wont do much on a manifold, why is it so successful on heads?

I think I will at least try reseating the gaskets.

Any good head porter will not completely polish the intake side of the head. You need a little roughness to promote swirl and keep velocity up.

Unless you have to take the manifold off. Then it takes about an hour to clean it off. I wish I would have taken my time and not glued them down.

you used too much glue...a little dab on each end of the gaskets will hold it in place...actually holley clearly states in the instructions to glue the gaskets...im an engine builder and there is no way you can get those gaskets lined up perfect without gluing them to the head,,,but what would i know...

Exactly how I did my install. A small dab on each end in a non-sealing portion of the gaskets.

After you click on the link at: http://www.ccgto.com/Dan_E/Dyno.jpg then click the dynosheet with your mouse, it will grow and you can read it better.

The gains in the lower ends between dyno #2 and #3 are most likely attributed to the tune that happened after install. It was a noticeable on the dyno screen while on the rollers.
