Default K&N filter question.

After cleaning the filter, do you have to spray the oil stuff on the filter? Wouldn't the filter alone work just fine? Does anyone do this? Also is there anything else to use to clean the filter other than what comes in the filter re-charge kit.

Well, I'm using Purple Power to clean it right now. So hopefully when I hose it off it will be clean. I just need to know about the oil.

The oil is required, and they sell the cleaner and oil at most autoparts stores.

Mine gets dirty quick cause of the FTRA - been using the same filter since early '01, just cleaning it with K&N's filter recharge kit - still have enough left in the kit for another few years. I always let it dry thoroughly and then LIGHTLY oil the filter.

I have always use the oil, but I was wondering if I could use a clean filter without using the oil.

You need the oil. it is the oil that traps the dirt.

The oil swells the cotton fibers and helps trap the dust particles, without the oil much larger particles would be able to pass through the mesh. In a pinch you could use some other type of aerosol oil until you can get the right stuff.

I've got a Holley, but I've never installed it. I got it used, but supplied with a cleaning kit/oil, and I'll agree - you must LIGHTLY oil it. I put way too much oil on mine, so I've been trying to get it to dry to the point that I can trust it. If I can't, I may just reclean it, and start over.
