Default What Intake to Use

I'm trying to figure out what intake I can use with my setup. I plan to use the GM ASA cam in my 03 LQ9 6.0L. This cam makes its peak horse power at about 6,000 rpm so I need an intake manifold that is capable of providing good flow at high rpms. The truck intake that comes stock on this motor is only good for up to 5200 rpm. Most people running this cam use the LS6 intake but since its so damn expensive I was wondering what kind of flow the LS1 intake will provide at 6,000+ rpms.

Simply saying the LS6 intake flows better is irrelevant. I need to know what the max rpm is for the LS1 intake.

If you think the LS6 intake is too expensive, you are in the wrong hobby. When an intake alone can provide 15-20 bhp on a stock motor, its definitely outflowing the LS1 isnt it?! Your next step up would be the FAST 78. Its not regarded as a good upgrade for the cost vs. an LS6 intake. From there its the the FAST 90. After that you go to an Edelbrock with an elbow, but thats for big dog power. Of course there are some other brands in there too suck as BBK, but they are not a composite intake like the FAST, so they are going to absorb heat.

well, really 300-400 bucks is cheap for an intake, while the ls1 will flow more at higher rpm than the truck intake, it will not feed that cam like an ls6. plus it is a step sideways from where you are, just get the ls6 the ls1 will really not give you any notable gain.

Just thought of it, will an LS1/6 intake bolt up to LQ9 heads?

Im not thinking it will since the heads on that motor are an L92 casting right?

Are you using LQ9 heads or upgrading to L92's? The factory LQ9 heads will accept all ls1/2/6 intakes, the L92 heads require the L78 intake.

I have a 5.3L w/ the stock truck intake and it made peak power at 6000 RPM's. I shift at 6400 most of the time, but have shifted as high as 7000 w/ no noticable drop off. If your budget is so tight that the LS6 intake seem expensive then stick w/ what you got. The additional plenum volume of the truck intake will provide better low end torque anyway.

I hate to start an intake war, but there was a magazine(CHP if I remember correctly) that flow tested all stock gen3 intakes and the truck intake flowed almost the same as the LS6(within a couple CFM).

I thought the LQ9 was factory with L92's?

The heads on the LQ9 are 317s and I'm pretty sure an F-body style manifold will work. The truck guys usually swap to the LS6 intake when they swap cams. Was just wondering how much more beneficial the LS6 would be over the LS1 considering the price difference of about $300-$400. I have a seller lined up near by selling an 99 T/A LS1 intake for $40 and am still trying to decide on which way to go.

Thats cool. Im not too savvy on those motors yet, so Id have to take your word for it. My advise is still to leave the LS1 intake alone, go LS6, its worth it. It would be a bigger gain on that motor with a cam than it would be on a stock LS1, so it could be upwards of a 30 hp gain over an LS1 intake.

Unless your just broke and want to drop it in already, then get the better intake when the budget allows. I know how that goes sometimes.

Well the way I look at it , you're always broke in this business. I just want to get everything planned out before I start buying parts that I don't need/want. I want to do it right the first time around. Thanks for your advice.
