Default straight pipes vs X pipe

I was wondering would there be any power loss if u ran straight pipes off of long tubes dumped before the axle. The reason i ask is because a buddy of mine had a 351 Windsor in his pickup and this setup sounded really good with 1 chamber flowmaster. I just cant see the reason for an X pipe that cost 400 +$ unless it really gives u that much of a power gain

I ran a single 4 inch straight pipe dumped before axle and it sounded godly with my 408. I made good power and had lots of torque too..

All the x-pipe is for is for sound. From what I've heard, people that have run straight pipe off of their headers didn't like the sound near as much as having an x or h pipe.
