Default 98 LS1 vs 99-02 LS1

What is so bad about the 98 LS1's? And to convert to a 99-02 LS1 would I just need the newer wiring harness and PCM and thats it? I am thinkin about buying a 98 LS1 with T56 setup and putting it in my 96. Any help would be appreciated as well as why I should stay away from the 98. It has 103k. Thanks Mike

hmmm, someone told me the oil pump caused most of them to fail prematurely. If thats the case, i could prob put all new bearings and a ported LS6 oil pump and have no worries rite?

The 98's are not wacked. The Computer is a bit more challenging to tune, but it can be done. The knock sensors pull like 4 degrees of timing so changing them to the new ones with the new harness would be best to fix that issue on all cars that were build pre the year of 1998. Also you would need a ls6 intake as the 01-02 cars came with one out of the factory. The oil is something you may want to replace. But mine has 177k with the stock stuff and its still running great.

yea did the research and the 99 is the one with the oil pump problems. The 98 seems to be harder to tune and less flexible and im guessing like you said the knock sensors arent the best. Ill prob go to a 99 harness and pcm later but for now seems good. Think replacing the bearings and maybe the oil pump will help this engine last longer? Thanks

Slight problems pcm, 806 casting heads, and intake manifold. Other than that theres not much difference. I wouldn't stay away from a 98. I own one, lol Don't be scared off.

yea there not that different, i talked to a tuner about it and he said tuning a 98 is not much different at all, he said thats way over emphasized at least from his standpoint. i heard some things can be more "fussy" like the knock sensors and such, but i havent had a problem with mine at all.

plus if i remember correctly, 98's were the only fbodys not to be equipped with the "black box" or was that a rumor?

i know what it does and what its for but i thought it was only on the Corvettes during the time the 4th gens were still being built. i know alot of new cars have it but i dont think 4th gens ever had them. i could very well be wrong but i think this info would have been out before...

well i know a guy who when his son blew his ls1 camaro he went and checked the black box, said he was speeding, reving too high before it happened, basically saying he was racing, he threw a piston out the side of the car, he went back and checked for holes and the kid had nitrous without his fathers permission. For some reason that set off the black box.

LOL, sounds like some twisted words to me. maybe he had some datalogging software running. but a factory "black box", i'm not to sure about! i am in doubt of this idea on f-bodies!
