Default Can someone explain - starter sloenoid

OK, so how can a bad starter solenoid prevent the car from starting?

Solenoid sends current to the starter motor itself and engages the pinion gear, without that the engine won't turn over.

The solenoid is like a relay. It gets a signal from the ignition switch and then connects the battery cable straight to the starter motor (in basic terms). If the solenoid goes bad the starter never gets power, plain and simple.
