check the head and cam install artical on ls1howto
Here is what I did to get mine off copied straight from that site. They also have some helpful pics in there as well
This part is fun....the removal of the power steering pump. Rather than remove the pulley and take the pump off the bracket, we'll just remove the whole unit assembled. This takes some patience...about 10 minutes of slow wrenching. Use the stubby 15mm wrench and using the open end, loosen each bolt a little at a time to slowly work the bracket slowly off the head. The bottom bolt will be a little hard to get due to a power steering line, but it can be gently held out of the way by a helper. The far drivers side bolt will also be a little blocked, and this is why you need to slowly work your way around the bolts and turn each one a few turns at a time...all while pulling the bracket off the head. It sounds complicated, but its not. You'll figure it out when you see it...its easy. The pic on the left shows the wrench on the bottom most bolt..just so you know it IS possible

Yeh, I agree with everything at LS1howto.com except for the "this takes about 10 minutes of slow wrenching" part.
Maybe 10 minutes per bolt..
Also, the Ls1howto.com is an absolutely invaluable site, but it is not perfect, there are steps/items missing from it..

I would just buy the puller. They are cheap enough in the tool dept. at the local auto parts store, problem is then you also need the installer also- but they are also cheap. If you will ever need it again it is worth having, for a one time thing maybe get loaner tools.

I would suggest using the puller/installer if you have access to the set... but if your going to go the slow wrench route.. try taking an old 15mm wrench and grinding it down on the sides to make it thinner.. or go to a Bikecycle shop and by one of there thin 15mm wrenchs. I have done it with both the puller/installer way and the slow wrench way... (thin wrench helps.)

Its a pain but possible
Just take the bolt that hold the assm . to the head not the braket just the to bolt in front think they are 13 mm and turn your box end around the way that it looks like it wont fit and it will. If you get it off this way make sure that you hold all the weight of it when reinstalling it onto the braket in the head or you will strip that ****** out .
