Default Last Bolt (6th Bolt)

I was wondering if anyone with XS headers has been able to get the back bolt on the driverside header to go in. I can get the first five in then the last doesn't fit correctly. Is this a flaw in the header design or have some of you gotten all six bolts in correctly?

Did you try loosing all your bolts and trying to put that one in?

yeah, get all the bolts in before torqueing them down. THen torque the center and work your way out.

You could try taking 4 of them out and then it will be most free to move into place.

ive heard that you have to just barely thread some of the other bolts in to get that last one to start. so untighten the others and see if that works.

mine didnt have that problem, but ive heard of other peoples sets doing that too

I didnt tq any of them down until they were all in. I just tried to get whatever one in that was the easiest and then went from there. Back lined up, it was just a pain.

I had to drill out four of the 12 bolt holes in order for them all to line up correctly. Maybe you can get it by loosening the others, but that's what I had to do.

We had to open that hole in particular to get it to fit. We also did the #1 so we could pivot the header a bit. Be careful threading in the bolts - if they're not perfectly straight it's easy to bugger up the threads in the head. Ask me how I know ...

we had the same problem u just have to be patient and go slow and torque each down a little at a time! its a header flaw! sucks!

yes, be careful with the bolts! make sure they are started perfectly straight. I buggered up one of my bolt holes in the head on the passenger side, and just this weekend, i was helping with a header install on a buddys car, and another kid messed up one of the passenger bolts also on the car. It happened to be the very back one. They will go, just be patient.

My dad helped me do my install and he had a good idea which was to go out and buy some longer M10 (or whatever it was) bolts and cut the heads off to make "studs."

I used three of them to get the header on and lined up, put in three "real" bolts, then took out the "studs" and replaced them with more "real" bolts.

Took no time at all......

Hmmm....how would you know if you "buggered" up one of the bolts or the heads? Would the bolts get stuck or something else?

It gets progressively harder to turn it as it goes in ... resistance keeps increasing.

Mine did the same thing. I just retapped the bolt hole and then worked the bolts in real slowly. Try getting the back one just started and then the front one so the holes are lined up on the others and you should be golden. It takes a little while to get it right because the header needs to be compleatly flush against the head and all the holes need to be lined up perfectly. Another pair of hands and a little luck will do wonders for ya.

Just be careful, on my Dynatechs, we got all the bolts in there except the middle one on the driver side. The header got cocked due to the clamping load of the headers and the POS Dynatech MLS Directional gasket almost fubar'ed the job, I fucked up some threads on the head but we got it out and tapped it.

Try to get the outside bolts 1st and work your way in. Do them all at the same time and make sure the thread evenly and cleanly. If you have to take all bolts and even head threads and tap/die them to ensure a clean fit.

Say hypothetically you overcame the greater resistance and got all six bolts in, should you undo it and try again, or just leave it?

I got all of them in with no problem. If by overcoming the greater resistance you mean you were able to thread them in by hand - torque them down and press on...

No I think he means that he just cranked on them despite them not wanting to go in as they should. Thats a tough call on what to do because if you take them out the holes could be all messed up. If you do take them out be sure to had a tap ready to redo the threads because if they were as difficult as mine, cranking them in definitely messed up the threads.

Well then... If they are tight and don't leak, I wouldn't touch 'em
