Default Problem with Magnaflow hitting upper PHB

I installed my Magnaflow cat-back about 6 months ago and have been trying to fix a very annoying rattle ever since. It only happens when I drive on bumpy or rough roads and it's definitely coming form the passenger rear area. There is at least an inch between the exhaust and upper panhard bar, even with the suspension loaded, but there are still signs of contact. I have tried adjusting it, double checking everything is tight, even removed it and re-installed it. Anyone else have this problem, how did you fix it? This is really getting on my nerves; I've never had my *** kicked by a cat-back before. So, what do you guys think, take it to an exhaust shop? UMI has a nice looking PHB relocation kit that gives you more room in that area but I don't want to just throw money at without know it will fix the problem or if there is an easier/cheaper fix. Thanks for the help!

If it was the UPHB I'd suspect that you'd hear a clunk from contact. It's possible it could be a heat shield issue you are hearing.

You just need to adjust it, mine did that.

Get it on a lift, loosen the clamps, us a transjack to push up on the piping and get it as high as you can with as much clearance as possible, tighten it back down, problem solved.

I did that but using jackstands. Anyone know if it is ok to remove the heat shields?

I wouldn't. The gas tank is behind the heat shield and it's plastic. Melt and boom

My car is a 98 so it has a metal gas tank and there are two seperate pieces, one for the tank and one for where the exhaust goes over the diff. I'm thinking about just removing the one above the diff temporarily just to isolate the issue. But, yeah, still kinda feels sketchy, that's why I'm asking if anyone has done it. Thanks for the help though.

It's not hitting the axle, the over-axle pipe is a good distance from the actual axle. It's hitting the panhard bar support. My Corsa did it for a while and would always find it's way back onto that bar. It never made a loud noise, it would just send a mild vibration through the car at 2,000rpm. I solved it by slipping a piece of radiator hose under the pipe and it has never been a problem since.

Try it out, it costs nothing and is hidden under the pipe.

Interesting. This might describe some of the sounds/vibration I've been getting.

I had problem with my exhaust when I had double diamond subframe connectors welded.

I went to exhaust shop.

Took off exhaust from cats back, just after Y pipe.

Next, guy at shop got welder out.

heated up the Y pipe (hot).

Stuck crowbar inside Y pipe pull down!

I was thinking the same thing, so I PMed UMI about theirs. Ryan at UMI said he runs a Magnaflow but didn't need the relocation kit, he indicated it might be a heat shield. Don't want to through money at it without knowing it will fix the problem.

I really, really would not suggest that.

Anyway, this is more of a clunk than rattle, if that helps. I haven't had a chance to work on it lately but thanks for the ideas guys.
