Default Are high flow cats louder than stock cats?

I just got TD's put on my 99 Z28. The new 2 1/4" piping starts right after the stock cats, back to Super 44 Flowmasters and dumped before the axle. There is an H-pipe. The thing is barely louder than stock...can't hear any of the flowmaster tone! Is this because of the stock cats, and would a high flow cat improve the sound at all? I'd like to keep this car legal, so removing or gutting the cats is not what I really want to do.

Yes, high flow cats are less restrictive than stock and will allow more sound to pass through your exhaust system.

I don't know how much louder it is with stock manifolds though. Maybe you could put in jba or bbk shorties at the same time.

Yes, when I was in the process of trying to perfect my sound after installing LT's, Tim and EAD told me that the high-flow spun metallic cats wouldn't do much to quiet rasp, and recommended the old style Carsound cats. The higher the flow, the less sound conditioning.

2 1/4" is plenty I thought, I have 2 1/2" TD's on my blown SS and it's plenty there too. Except the SS sounds like it should! (no cats and a bunch of motor stuff)

The D side cat is clear up on the manifold. The P side cat is not much further back. They are both located in a position way before the Y pipe comes together, so we started the new piping right after each cat. Maybe I can snap a pic today if that doesn't explain it well enough.

Could it be the mufflers? Someone told me that the Super 44's are very quiet, yet Flowmaster says that they are the most aggressive sounding muffler they've produced???

I would think the 1 chambers are the loudest and most agressive of the flowmaster mufflers. Switch over to them and i should add some volume. Much smaller and less restrictive than the 44 series.

Most aftermarket high-flow cat cores are 300 holes-per-inch. Stock are more restrictive and quieter.

Still wondering just how big the sound difference is between stock cats and high flow cats. I did some searching and it seems as if the HF cats do allow more sound but I'd love a before and after clip before I spend the $$$ on them.
