Big Exhaust Problem (Sound Note)
This week i installed:
QTP Race Style Headers
QTP ORY
Corsa 3.5
I love the sound when i accelerate!
But when i let go of the gas completely from an RPM higher than 3,000 it makes this horrible popping sound, its gut wrenching!
I want to fix this popping sound but Cats. are not an option. I have heard a Bullet in the "i" pipe can fix this but doesnt fix it every time.
What are my options other than thoes two that will fix that poping sound?
Is an option the Borla XR-1 Round Sportsman Racing Muffler in the "i" pipe? Will that compleatly fix it?
Thanks for the help, i just got really excited because the temp. is up 5* more here and i finaly go to take it out, but it was kind of disappointing.

hey detox what catback are you running? do you have a cutout? i like the sound you have when you rev. i might have to pick up one of those borla x1 mufflers for before my cutout.
and GORDON, i think it is an exhaust leak making that poping sound. only exhaust i heard that poped naturally was the loudmouth. do you have your ypipe welded? and the catback azwell? might be good idea to throw it on the lift, and just look around and see if you can feel any leaks.

I think you should reconsider the cats. Mine does not really pop and crackle like some. Actually, I think mine makes an awesome sound when letting off above 5K. I can't really describe it.

oddly I only get the pop at startup, and only sometimes even. I'd check for leaks in your pipes. Should show nice black spots where it's leaking and sucking in air causing the mini backfires within the pipes.

There are definitely a lot of theories being thrown around in here, and most I don't agree with.
The exhaust popping has always been there, even with the stock exhaust. You've gotten rid of everything in the exhaust system that was muffling this sound, and a big portion of that has to do with getting rid of your cats.
I've narrowed it mostly to Deceleration Fuel Cutoff (DFCO) on my car, which happens on heavy decel. When my car pops at all, my wideband always shows lean.
A resonator isn't the answer to this...it might help some, but a muffler that muffles more sound will help the most if you are intent on not using your catalytic convertors.
It has been said previously in this very thread - it is the nature of the beast. If you don't like it, you need to change your mods. A few squirts of sealant and a resonator are the last places I'd look, though.

I Have This Problem Also. I Know Were My Pacesetters Meet The Y-pipe They Leak. I Also Have A Dynomax Bullet In The I-pipe. Thats Not Helping. Not Real Thrilled With The Thought Of Welding Those. Also No Cats. When On The Decel I Push The Clutch In So I Dont Get The Backfiring. Its A Terrible Sound. I Have 112k On The Car, And When My Brother N Law Tuned It Last, He Said The 02 Sensors Were Lazy, So I Thought That Might Be Why It Was Backfiring. I Have Not Put Sensors In It Yet To See If That Was The Problem.

Well i ordered my KOOKS resonator that is going in the i pipe, they gave me a price i couldnt give up.
So i will be installing it Tuesday along with the sealant.
If that doesnt give me the sound that i want then it was worth the try an i will just get use to it.
Maybe the next thing will be new o2 sensors.
Kooks said the resonator should clear up the sound some.
Hope it works and i will keep you all posted.
