Default Automatic tensioner?

Anybody know what these sound like when they go bad? My belt slipped off earlier today accompanied by the sound of a rain stick when I let off the gas. I put a new belt on, it hasn't moved but the sound is still there. I see a lot of threads about the A/C tensioner but I have no A/C.

Isn't the katech tensioner much better since it hold more tension? The pulley is just a pulley.
