Default Hooker long tube header install question.

I am thinking about putting the Hooker LT's on my 98' TA and was wondering if it is normal to have to grind off one of the little tabs on the drivers side of the engine block to get them on? The shop I've been using has done a few cars now with these and said they had to do it on all of them. The part of the block they cut off was very small and didn't look important but is there a way to get these on without having to do this? I was hoping to be able to put them on myself. Do any other brands seem to fit/install better? Thanks

Sounds like the shop is "cheating" so that they don't have to jack up the drivers side of the engine or unbolt the steering linkage.

The tab is still on mine...I jacked up the engine, seeing as how I was installing it at the time....

I agree with plumb crazy. You should not have to grind that tab off.

I've installed a set of Hooker LTs in 5 1/2 hours. Not one time did I grind anything, or even jack up the engine. They are considerably easy to install. You need to...

A) Get the car up high enough to get them in from the bottom.

B) Remove the steering linkage and "oil diverter plate" (piece held on by 2 bolts just above the filter).

Those 2 things were key on getting them in. I never had to take off the valve covers or coil packs either.

However, I wouldn't expect to have this done in 5 1/2 hours if its your first one.

Good luck!

If (you) dont have to grind them, and plan on letting the shop do it,let (them) grind them off,Im sure youre paying them well to do that! Doesnt hurt anything! Except for the chance of a chunk of the block coming off with the tab!!!! J/K!!! I grinded mine off to do my Macs, but when I did my SLPs I dropped the trans bolt and pried the drivetrain over, two bolts, easy enuff for me and Im an idiot!!!!

The Hookers are easy to install.Just remove the steering shaft and the diverter plate over the oil filter. You dont even have to raise the motor or remove the starter.Easy!

why all the interest in saving the casting block?
Would you purposely try to save a wart? What's the difference...?

Save a tree, save a whale, save the planet....but a casting block?

Knock that sucker on off, 5 or 6 seconds with a saws all, no need to jack the engine then.....I'm certain which one of the 2 ways can be done faster However if you think the block senses pain or whatever then by all means do it the other way.

The key to installing Hooker LT on the driver side is the steering linkage. If you remove the linkage, then you don't have to grind the block tab. It was easier for me to grind the tab instead of removing the linkage.

just installed my jet hots 3 weeks ago but i used a hoist all i can say is that it was hella easy and fits like a glove. no bad issues
on driver side the only thing i took out is the oil diverter plate (2bolts) and the steering shaft on the passenger side i took off my heat shields, no scratches on car nor headers. plus the coating looks really nice

I jacked the right side of the engine up and it slid right in.
