Talking LT1 Intake Air Duct Stem Thingy

I was trying to clean up my throttle body yesterday, and I removed my intake ducting only to find a good half gallon of water in that long stem of a tube below the elbow. I figure I must have sucked it in there when I ended up in some high water a few months back. Needless to say, water is gone, and the car is running much happier.

Does anyone know what aerodynamic purpose that stem serves on the intake?

Oh...

Sidenote: How much difference is there on the porting between an LT1 and LT4 cylinder head or intake manifold?

Take the tube out and plug the hole in the elbow with a shampoo bottle. By the way your in the wrong section.
