Default Rear End

I'm looking to mod my car, I was just wondering how much power you can add with the stock rear end before it will break? I heard that the ten-bolt sucks.

ya not alot, Ive seen some on here that busted the stock rear end on stock power, but some that run at the strip all the time and never have a problem. From what Ive seen/heard the M6 tends to be harder on the rear than the auto. Thats why first thing I bought a moser 9inch.

I wish I would have done that first. Nothing like having the power but being afraid of the 10 bolt going If I had it to do over, I would definitely do a Moser 9" right after a lid and catback.

My 98 broke an axel with only a K&N filter for a mod. My 00 SS is still going strong with 430rwhp / 403rwtq.

Yep, grenaded the stock rear with a lid and catback. Tossed in a Strange 12 bolt with 4.11's. Best SOTP mod for me.

I think it depends on your luck... I've been on 443 rwhp for a while not..... It is an auto which helps a lot..

405 rwhp (385tq) through a 6 speed here...

I broke 2 teeth off my last ring gear. That set lasted a while though before it broke. Those were 4.10s. Car has never seen the track... just street action. The current gear set is a little noisy right now but seems to be holding up ok otherwise.

The shop that works on my car put it this way to me once... "What are you worried about? Go ahead and break it if you can. You can fix it for less than $300". Kinda makes sense when you think about how much it costs to put in a stronger rear. Unless you're making a lot more power and really need the extra strength, it makes more sense to buy go fast parts in the beginning. I've only spent $750 in parts for my 4.10s, including the set I broke in the 10 years Ive had my car... 7 of which were as a daily driver. They also like to point out there's quite a few high horsepower cars out of that shop that run 10 bolts no problem.

My advice would be to spend your money on some parts that make you more power and maybe just throw a set of gears in the 10 bolt which will get you a very nice seat of the pants improvement.

Why replace what aint broken

LMFAO!! Just couldn't help but get a laugh outta that! My rear-end is toast too, mostly 'cause the owner was running NOS with stock drivetrain. F***in MORON!! Anyway, it still drives but makes a LOT of noise when there's any stress on the gears. Swat

i know this isnt the topic of the thread, but if you're just starting to mod your LS1, make sure you cover a lot of basic **** before hand... like replacing old filters.. radiator flushes.. new sensors, alternator, battery, I've found that once you start modding your ****, it all starts breaking... even with a few bolt ons...
But if you have the money to mod it, mod away...
10 Bolts are debated on all the time, some say theirs has held up to 500.. others said they broke it stock, it's a flip of the coin really.. Would you rather have it break in a money stringent situation or have it live is my question
